Zirconium carbide is an inorganic substance that belongs to the non-metallic carbide with the chemical formula ZrC 
Structure and characteristics of zirconium carbide:

Zirconium carbide forms a simple gap phase, Zr atoms form a compact cubic lattice, C atoms are in the octahedral gap position of the lattice, Zr and C atoms can each form a face-centric cubic structure, in an octahedral structure, each zirconium atom and carbon atom is surrounded by six other kinds of atoms of sub-neighbors. ZrC has a wide homogeneous region, in the homogeneous region of the carbon content will change, so the true composition should be by the formula ZrCx to represent its larger non-stoichiometric composition, here x is the atomic ratio of carbon and zirconium, in the range x = 0.5 ~ 1 carbide crystal structure unchanged.
Carbon deficiency is caused by the vacancy of carbon atoms in the carbon sub-grid, and the vacancy concentration regularly affects the properties related to Zr-C bond strength, such as condensation energy, melting point, elastic constant, hardness and high temperature plastic behavior, as well as defect-related migration properties, such as thermal, electrical conductivity and diffusion behavior.
The preparation of zirconium carbide has direct synthesis method, carbon thermal reduction method, sol gel method, self-spreading combustion synthesis method, plasma chemical vapor phase synthesis method, mechanical alloy method and low temperature synthesis method, etc. The industry is generally prepared by carbon reduction ZrO2, and then molded and sintered into ceramics. Zirconium carbide powder has high temperature resistance, high hardness, good thermal conductivity, good chemical stability and other properties. It is soluble in nitric acid, hot concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia, and is easily soluble in molten caustic soda.

(1) It can be used as a heat-proof material for industrial aircraft and propulsion systems, such as the wing leading edge of the space shuttle, hypersonic combustion ramjet, etc.;

(2) Zirconium carbide can be used as an abrasive for the processing of various hard metals, corundum or glass, and can also prepare wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant zirconium carbide crucibles and tools;

(3) Zirconium carbide can be applied to coatings as high-temperature coatings to improve the surface properties of materials;

(4) Zirconium carbide can be used in the nuclear fuel industry, electronic equipment protective films, superhard film materials and high-brightness electron emission films. Because of its low neutron absorption cross-section and good radiation resistance, it can be used as an inert matrix material in nuclear reactors, such as nuclear fuel coating materials;

(5) Zirconium carbide can be used to modify carbon fiber, greatly improve the strength and fatigue resistance of carbon fiber, enhance wear resistance and high temperature resistance, and apply aerospace carbon fiber material modification;
